Palmer as written on pages 1 and 12 of "The Camilla Enterprise" dated 22 Aug 1958. Camilla, Georgia. Causing widespread shock and grief among his host of friends and large family connection was the very sudden and unexpected death from a heart attack of Jerome Palmer, forty-one year old resident, death coming around eleven o'clock Friday night, August 15th. He had reached home between 9:00 and 9:30 P. M. from Camilla Cotton Oil Company where he was working late receiving a load of peanuts. He complained of a headache and being tired and went on to bed. The fatal coronary attack came shortly afterwards. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at four o'clock at the Camilla Methodist Church, the use of this church requested by the family since the own home church of the deceased, the First Baptist Church of Camilla, was undergoing repairs and the auditorium being inaccessible. The pastor of the First Baptist Church, the Rev. Edgar T. Davis, Jr. officiated, and interment followed in Oakview Cemetery. Pallbearers were Roy Palmer of Sylvester, Morton (Shorty) Glausier and Fred Hollis Jr., both of Pelham, and Alva C. Thomas, Ernest G. Smith, Cleo Rogers, Tommy Cullens and David P, Luke, Jr. Forming an honorary escort were members of the local Alcoholics Anonymous group and the Brotherhood of the First Baptist Church. Palmer was currently serving the Brotherhood as President. Bramlett Funeral Home of Camilla had charge of funeral arrangements. Mr. Palmer was born November 27, 1916, in Mitchell County, the son of the late Preston Hammond Palmer and Minnie Lee Moore Palmer. His father preceded him in death on November 20, 1956. He was born and grew up on the family farm on the Harmony Road section out from Pelham. In October of 1930 the Palmer family moved to Winter Haven, Fla. and it was there that the deceased attended high school and was graduated in 1935, a year after the family moved back to Mitchell County. He spent several years in Florida after his graduation from high school and after coming back to Mitchell County he met and married Miss Helen Rowland, of Pittsburgh, Pa. Their marriage took place on April 21, 1939. In 1940 he and his wife went to Pennsylvania where he worked until entering the service of the United States Marines in 1942. He was in combat with the Marines in the Pacific during World War II and received a medical discharge in 1945 when he was wounded in the battle of Tinian Islands. That same year the couple moved back to Mitchell County and Camilla where they became active in the affairs of the community. Mr. Palmer was a faithful and devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Camilla. He taught a Sunday School class and had just recently been elected President of the Baptist Brotherhood. He enjoyed golfing and the social activities of Pinecrest Country Club where he served on the Board of Managers. He was a charter member of the Camilla Toastmasters Club formed the early part of this year. He was a member of the American Legion and Woodman of the World. He was affiliated in business with Camilla Cotton Oil Company and Holland Insurance Agency of Pelham now Service Agency. Mr. Palmer had a deep feeling for all his kin and just recently completed a term of one year as President of the Palmer Reunion Organization, taking an active part in the group's search for historical data concerning members of the Palmer family now gone to their reward. Genial and friendly of manner, Mr. Palmer was fond of children. One of the biggest joys of his lifetime was the adoption by he and his wife on August 15, 1953, of a son, Johnny. Survivors include his wife, who for some years has served as office manager for the Mitchell County Electric Membership Corporation; his mother, Mrs. Preston Hammond Palmer; two adopted sons, Eddie and Johnny; two sisters, Mrs. Jack Culpepper of Winter Haven, Fla. and Mrs. Ben Bateman of Camilla.
