Camilla, Georgia. In a moment of despondency over his extremely bad health for the past ten to twelve years, undergoing several major operations during that time, James Louie Shirah, one of Mitchell County's most prominent and successful farmers took his own life early Tuesday morning. His body was found at about 7:45 A. M. Tuesday morning by his eldest son, Louie Shirah, Jr. The family had just a short time before finished breakfast and his wife and other children were out on the grounds around the house and farm attending to some early morning chores. News of his death spread rapidly over the community and the county and brought shock, sorrow and grief to friends who had known and respected him as one of the county's most capable farmers, realizing at the same time the health hardship he had borne for so long a time. Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon, Wednesday, at three o'clock at Hopeful Baptist Church where he had been a faithful and devoted member for years. The pastor, Rev. C. D. Justice, officiated, assisted by the Rev. C. R. Pittard, of Albany. Interment followed in Hopeful Cemetery with Bramlett Funeral Home of Camilla in charge of arrangements. Active pallbearers were John Richard Lee, W. W. (Bill) Keadle, Tom Hays, James Mercer, Cleo Rogers, Edwin Sawyer. An honorary escort was formed by Charlie Bridges, Ralph Davis, Carroll Spence, Ralph Wells, Ralph Fitzgerald, Donal Hays, Millard Johnson, Cliff Bostick, Marvin Whigham, Calvin Baggs, Jr., C. K. He was born and reared in the Hopeful community, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Johnny E. Shirah, his mother being the former Miss Mable Cross. The photo above is one of the latest made of him and was snapped several months ago when his parents celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Mr. Shirah was forty-eight years old. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and Hopeful's active community chapter, and he served on the Board of Trustees of Hopeful School. In early manhood he was married to the former Miss Linda Smith, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Smith of Hopeful. Survivors include his parents; his wife; two sons, Louie Jr. and Donald; two daughters, Barbara and Beth; two brothers, C. W. Shirah of Albany, and Emory Shirah of Hopeful; two sisters, Mrs. E. S.
