She had been in declining health for the past year. Descended from a number of Southwest Georgia pioneer families, and tracing her lineage to the very early days of this country, Eleanor Voncile Wingate was born in Camilla on May 4, 1928, the only daughter of the late Rosier Kelly Wingate, Sr. and Ethel Lucile Musgrove Wingate, her mother being a native of Baker County. Mrs. Simmons graduated from Camilla High School in 1945, and from Andrew College in 1947. On November 5, 1952, she married Charles Jefferson (Jeff) Davis, who preceded her in death on October 14, 1967. Widowed at the age of 39, she dedicated herself to raising and educating her children, always being an active volunteer in their school and church. In the early 1970’s, she began a part-time job with the Mitchell County Health Department that soon evolved into a full-time position, from which she retired in 1990. On December 4, 1982, she married James Howard Simmons, and they shared 19 ½ years together until his death on May 30, 2002, truly enriching each other’s later years. Always dedicated to her church and volunteering in many capacities throughout her adult life, she held the position of Secretary of the Nursery Department at First Baptist Church for over 50 consecutive years. She was a very positive person, a devoted Christian, a source of solid guidance and advice for her children and grandchildren, and a friend to her every acquaintance, always taking a keen interest in anything of benefit to a neighbor or friend.
