Simmons, retired banker and farmer, died Thursday, May 30, 2002 at the Camilla Retirement Village following a brief illness. He was 80. Born November 5, 1921 in Gilmer County, Ga., he was the only child of Charlie T. and Lemma Goble Simmons. As a young child, the family lived briefly in Auburndale, Florida before moving to Camilla, where he lived the rest of his life. He graduated with honors from Camilla Consolidated School, and held a degree from Georgia Southwestern College. He served in the Merchant Marine during World War II, and was retired from the Bank of Camilla after 33 years of service, where he was an officer and a member of the Board of Directors. He was a long time member of the Camilla Lions Club, having served as treasurer for many years, and he was honored several years ago with the Mel Jones Fellow Award by the club. He was the Camilla representative for the Salvation Army for many years. A devout member of the Camilla First Baptist Church, he was a member of the Men’s Bible Class, was an ordained Deacon, served for over 20 years as church clerk, and had served the church in numerous capacities over his adult life. His Christian principles were practiced in his everyday walk in life. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 1, at 3 P.M. at the Camilla First Baptist Church. Burial followed in the R. K. Wingate Family lot in Oakview Cemetery. Serving as active pallbearers were David Harris, Ray Muggridge, Jim Lapham, Ralph Davis, Tommy Akridge, Tom Lastinger, Stripling Luke, and Kelly Wingate. Honorary pallbearers were the First Baptist Church Men’s Class, Camilla Lions Club, Sunshine Club of the First Baptist Church, employees of the Bank of Camilla, Glenn West, Bill Taylor, Tom Akridge, Webb Bullard, Paul Parker, and Buddy Davis. He was married to the former Eleanor Wingate Davis on December 4, 1982, who survives him. In addition, he is survived by a daughter, Susan Davis Luke and her husband, Roy, of Camilla, a son, Charles J. Davis, Jr., and his wife, Debbie, of Cairo, three grandchildren, Stripling Luke and Lark Luke, of Camilla, and Blair Davis of Cairo; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bo and Louise Wingate, and Buddy and Gloria Davis, Camilla, Martha D. Thigpen of Bainbridge, and Elizabeth Davis of Panama City, Fla.; an aunt, Rachel Goble of Knoxville, Tenn; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
