Camilla, Georgia. Mitchell County lost one of its most prominent and best loved citizens Wednesday when Joseph Lamar Wingate died of a heart attack around 1:00 P. M. at his home on the Hopeful road. His passing came as a shock to family and friends alike. He had gone to the polls early Wednesday morning to cast his ballot and then went to Pelham for a short while where he stood around and talked with some friends. Later he came back and stopped at Camilla Cotton Oil Company in Camilla to transact some business before going home to dinner. He died just before he sat down for his noon meal. He had been suffering from a heart condition for the past year or more but had been able to continue in most of his varied activities. Funeral services took place at simple graveside rites yesterday (Thursday) afternoon at 3:00 P. M. at Oakview Cemetery in Camilla. Officiating was the Rev. Edgar T. Davis, Jr., pastor of the First Baptist Church of Camilla, and Rev. N. H. Williams, retired. Active pallbearers were Almond Spence, Edwin Rackley, Jr., Drewry Luke, Harry Wingate, Lewis Campbell, R. K. Wingate, Jr., Harry Holton and James Holton. Forming an honorary escort were Robert Culpepper, Jr., Woodrow Brooks, Weyman C. Holton, Wyatt Whitley, Tom S. Jackson, Virgil Holton, Harry McGahee, J. L. Joiner, Barrett Wingate, Lawrence Glenn, Dr. M. W. Williams, Dr. A. A. McNeill, I. Macey, John M. Maples, Brazier Holton, Robert Wingate, R. H. Taylor, Plant C. Cullens. Bramlett Funeral Home of Camilla had charge of funeral arrangements. Joseph Lamar Wingate was born in Mitchell County fifty-six years ago, the son of the late Ransom Beauregard Wingate and Lula Margaret West Wingate. He would have reached his fifty-seventh birthday in December of this year. At the time of his birth his parents owned the farm now operated today by Mr. and Mrs. Ernest C. Jones out on the Hopeful road. Mr. Wingate attended and graduated from the local high school and then attended University of Georgia for about three years where he studied veterinary medicine. He lacked only a little bit of graduating from the University. After this he spent a year out in Texas where he worked with the Coca Cola Company. He came back to Georgia and farmed with his father in Baker County for a short while before the family moved back to Mitchell and the farm now operated by C. S. (Slim) Johnson near the Flint River on the Newton highway. On December 16, 1921, he was happily united in marriage with the former Miss Lillie Belle Merritt, native of Calhoun County. His wife survives him along with one daughter, Mrs. Hartley Holton; three sons, Joe, Merritt and Bob Wingate; one brother, Lynwood Wingate of Pelham, who just recently retired from many years service as president of the Georgia Farm Bureau Federation; two sisters, Mrs. J. Edwin Rackley, Sr. of Camilla, and Mrs. Hershel Davis of Columbus; twelve grandchildren including Lou Wingate, Stancy Wingate, Marr Wingate, Ramona Wingate, Buddy Wingate, David Wingate, Cliff Wingate, Ual Wingate, Susan Wingate, Kathy Holton, Pat Holton and William Holton. Mr. Wingate served three terms of four years each as County Commissioner of Mitchell County. His first term was 1945 to 1949 when he served along with A. R. Baggs, W. B. Hays, J. L. Joiner and E. B. Beasley. His second term was 1949 to 1953 when served along with W. B. Hays, J. L. Joiner, Walter Pollock and Tom S. Jackson. The third term was 1953 to 1957 when he served along with Lofton Glover, John Collins, Sr., Neil Chambliss and Tom S. Jackson. During his twelve years as a Commissioner Mr. Wingate served the Board as Chairman for a while. Wingate served for your years during World War II as Chairman of the Mitchell County Draft Board, succeeding Bill Grant of Pelham. At the time of his death he was Vice President of the Albany Production Credit Association and served as a director for the past twenty years or more. Engaged in farming all his life, Mr. Wingate took an active interest in all of the farming organizations and movements in the county in behalf of agriculture.
