He was 91. The remains were cremated. A celebration of his life, attended by family members, was held at First Baptist Church in Camilla on Saturday, October 21, 2006. The remains were interred in the Rosier and Martha Ann Wingate family lot in Oakview Cemetery. In attendance were family members from Georgia, Florida, New Jersey, California, and Texas. A native of Camilla, he was the son of the late L. G. and Lula Key Wingate. He was born February 2, 1914. He retired from the United States Army Air Force as Lieutenant Colonel after a 27 year career, during which time he served three tours of duty outside of the United States, including Panama from 1939 through 1942, Japan in the early 1950’s, and Saudi Arabia in 1957. After his retirement from the Air Force, he settled in El Paso, Texas, where he enjoyed a successful 26 year career in real estate. After retiring from his real estate business, he moved to San Antonio where he resided for the last 19 years of his life. Woodrow loved Camilla and its people, and always considered Camilla his home. For many years, he made annual trips from Texas, driving himself from San Antonio until he was in his late 80’s. On his last trip, at the age of 89, his son Jimmy drove him. Most of his visits were at the cemetery, as he had outlived the majority of his childhood friends. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Virginia (Dixie) Carlisle Wingate, San Antonio, whom he met and married while stationed in Panama; two sons, Jimmy Wingate and wife Sue Ann, of Fort Worth, Texas, and Russ Wingate and wife Tracy, of New Berlin, New Jersey; a daughter, Janet Wingate Lowery and husband Bob, of Salinas, California; seven grandchildren, Maribeth Wingate Slagle and husband Bryan Slagle, Grapevine, Texas; Mandy Wingate Robertson and husband Scott Robertson, The Woodlands, Texas; 1st LT Chris Wingate and wife Suzanne, Fort Hood, Texas; Heather Wingate and Jennifer Wingate Billings, Wilmington, North Carolina; Alyson Lowery, Salinas, California; Madisyn Wingate and Samantha Wingate, New Berlin, New Jersey; Great-grandchildren include Taylor Slagle, Jonathan Luke Robertson, Joshua David Robertson, Jayden Wingate, and Braxton Billings; Russ’s first wife, Debi Adams-Wingate, was also in attendance.
