This family goes back to Vincent Allen Tharpe, 1760-1825, who was the pastor of Stone Creek Baptist Church, Twiggs Co. and parent church of the First Baptist Church in Macon. He also served with Francis Marion's troups in the Revolution. The reference for this is in SIFTING THROUGH THE ASHES FOR THE ALTHORP, THARP, ETC. by Eleanor Davis McSwain. If someone is interested in the Tharpe, Tharp, etc. line I will help them if I can. Vincent T. Allentharpe was born in Virginia. Born 18 November 1760. Married a Miss Rogers and had 2 children, John A. Tharpe, 1 September 1781, married Elizabeth Hatcher, Mary A. Tharpe b. 28 January 1783. Miss Rogers A. Tharpe died. He married 2nd Sarah Pierson, d. of Jeremiah Pierson of the Revolution. I have the Dar approval. They had Elizabeth, b. 11 September, 1787 William, b. 5 October 1788 m. Eden Taylor married Georgia Virginia Tharpe. daughter of William Tharpe and Martha Davis. She was born 27 July 1839 and died October 22, 1872. Picture of her on page 95 in Sifting through the Ashes by McSwain. Eden then married Sallie (Sarah) Brown. 1852-1895 Eden then married Julia Arabella Tharpe Lundy, a neice of wife #1. So Eden must have died after he married Julia. There are also pictures of William and Martha in SIFTING THROUGH THE ASHES by Eleanor Davis McSwain. A great book on the Tharpes Also refer to HISTORY OF TWIGGS COUNTY, GEORGIA by J. Lanette O'Neal Faulk and Billy Walker Jones. Rev. Vincent and Sarah Allentharpe are thought to be buried at Stone Creek Baptist Church but there are no markers or stones. I have visited Stone Creek Baptist Church and talked with the pastor. This is the marker at the church: "VINCENT T. ALLENTHARP 1760-1825 Vincent T. Allentharpe was born in Virginia, Nov. 18, 1760. A soldier of the Revolution, he moved to Georgia in 1784 and was ordained as a Baptist Minister at Briar Creek Church in Warren County. He preached at Sweetwater and Rocky Creek Baptist Churches in Burke County. In 1811 he moved to Twiggs County and was pastor of this church until his death Sept. 23, 1825. His work was rewarded by the growth of his church in which the Tharpes have been active for more than 100 years. (1941)" I have visited his home. The Georgia Historical Marker reads as follows: "REV. VINCENT A. THARP HOME (1809) This historical house, built for Rev. V. A. Tharpe by his sons, John and Charnick, with slave labor in 1809 is the oldest known house in Twiggs County, then Wilkinson. The Tharp family, who occupied this house in the wilderness in 1811 helped to supply Baptist leadership in the surrounding area and the Ebenezer Baptist Assn. Baptist notables were guests in this hospitable home. Revs. Polhill, Franklin, Ross, Rhodes, Baker, McGinty, Mercer and others. In 1832 the property was sold to John Parker for $600. Later owners have been Joe Burkett, P. W. Martin and American Clay Co. and Stone Creek Baptist Church. The hand hewn timber and logs remain in this pioneer landmark." I have also visited the Jeremiah A. Tharpe #1 cemetery where Jane Dunn Tharpe is buried. Jeremiah's home is still standing in pieces. Charnick's grave yard is there but his home was destroyed by the tornado that knocked down the original Stone Creek Baptist Church. Their parents were William Taylor and Mary Hannas who moved to Northern Ireland from Scotland. As the ship approached Philadelphia, Simeon Taylor’s wife, Mary Morrison, gave birth and the ships captain would not let them off the ship with the remainder of their family (Taylors and Morrisons.) The ship continued on to North Carolina where the Simeon Taylor’s settled on the Tarr River in the County of Pitt. In addition to the land in North Carolina, Simeon claimed his bounty land in Chester County Pennsylvania where his relatives settled. On one of his trips to Chester PA,, he joined the militia and was killed on Sept. 11, 1777 at the Battle of Brandywine and was buried in a mass grave on the battlefield. (Bernice Buchanan’s “Genealogical History of the Taylor Family” published. 1939 ; Jack K. Fletcher’s chapter "TAYLOR 1760-1999" in a publication by the Monroe County Historical Society, pp352-353).
