The trouble grew out of the killing of a negro by the Baliff and three deputies, Dr. Williams and two other prominent young men, who had been summoned to assist in the arrest. The negro was a desparate character and had sworn that no white man could lay hands on him. He was in the act of shooting at the baliff and deputies when killed. After the killing a mob of negroes gathered at Bollinbroke, swearing vengence on the slayer of Simmons. Sheriff Newton and posse were summoned from Forsyth, and their coolness and courage in handling the mob prevented a bloody race riot. The three young men immediately gave themselves up and in a preliminary trial at Forsyth were bound over to appear at regular term of court. Says the Macon Telegraph: "The young men involved bear a reputation second to none in Monroe county and no one believes them guilty of nany wrong. They were simply discharging their duty." The friends of Dr. Williams in this county are gratified to know that he has been exonerated of all blame, and congratulate him that nothing more serious has resulted from the unfortunate affair.
