PROMINENT FARMER KILLED BY MEEK Son of V.M. Meek shoots his Father-in-law with pistol Claims self defense Bound over Forsyth was shocked on Friday morning at the tragedy at Manilla which resulted in the killing of Mr. R.H. McDaniel, a prominet and well known farmer of that community by Tom Meek, his son- in-law. Mr. and Mrs Meek were living on the place of Mr. McDaniel, where young Meek had a crop. It is understood that Mr. Meek and his father-in-law had some words on Tuesday afternoon and that on Wednesday, Mrs. Meek left her husband and returned to her father's house, Tom Meek coming to his father's house in Forsyth. On Thursday, returned to his home and brought a load of his furniture to Forsyth and on Friday, in company with his Negro Driver, went back for a second load. It was said that Mr. McDaniel was at Mr Meek's house and objected to the latter's carrying off his goods: a dispute arose which resulting of the drawing of a pistol by Meek and the shooting of his father-in-law. The ball entered the groin, penetrating an artery, and Mr. McDaniel died almost instantly. It is the contention of Mr Meek that he tried to avoid the difficulty and that he was driven away from his own home by his father-in-law and that he was followed around the house and that he had started away from the house and was fifty yards away , when hearing a noise, he turned just in time to see Mr. McDaniel with an ax handle raised to stike him and he fired to save his own life. It is the contention of the prosecuter that at the time Mr. McDaniel was shot he was unarmed, without a weapon of any kind in his hand and that Mr. Meek is guilty of Murder. After the killing, Meek left, going to Mr. Homer Meek's and later coming to Forsyth. A warrent was sworn out on Saturaday by one of Mr. McDaniel's boys, charging Meek with the homicide and he was lodged in the Monroe County jail. On Monday afternoon, the commitment trial was held before Judge J.P. Carson lasting throughout the afternoon. The State was represented by Soliciter General Emmett Owen and the Defense by Willingham and Willingham and A.M. Zellner. At the conclusion of the arguments, Mr. Meek was bound over on the charge of Voluntery Manslaughter to wait the action of the Grand Jury and his bond assessed at $1,000. This was easily made and Mr. Meek is now out on bond. Tom Meek is the son of Mr. V.M. Meek and is well known and popular young man. Because of the prominence of each of the principals the sad occurance has created considerable excitement . The unfortunate tragedy is deeply deplored.
