     On Saturday, February 1st, Mr. John J. Barnes died suddenly at his home 
near Dyas, in the southern part of the county.  While Mr. Barnes had been in 
declining health for several years, his death was quite a shock to his family 
and friends and the news was received with much sadness by the community.
     Mr. Barnes was born in Virginia seventy years ago.  He came to Georgia 
before the war when a young man.  He served his county during the Civil war 
with distinction.  The effects of his service, as it did with many of the old 
veterans, lingered with him to his dying day.
     Mr. Barnes made a good citizen.  He was quiet and peaceable and desired 
to live at peace with his neighbors.  He believed in attending to his own 
affairs and not his neighbors.  He some time ago united with the Bapptist 
[sic] church at Russelville and lived a consistent member of the same, always 
anxious to attend the services whenever his health would permit.
     Mr. Barnes had been married three times.  His first marriage was to Miss 
Eliza Anderson.  After her death he married her sister, Miss Jeannette 
Anderson.  His third wife was Miss Addie Lessuer, who survives him.  The 
following children also survive him:  John M. Barnes of Russelville, Marion W. 
Barnes of Musella, H. O. and Mrs. Alice Landrum of Thomaston, Andrew L. Barnes 
of Florida, and Miss Mattie Kate Barnes who is at the old home with her mother.
     To the bereaved family the sympathies of the community are extended.
