C. Harris, the efficient marshal of Forsyth, was killed while attempting to arrest a negro on Sunday night the 2nd inst. The negro was said to be very desperate and was wanted for a serious offense. He had concealed himself in a fodder loft, and when Marshal Harris went to arrest him the negro fired three shots at Marshal Harris, each of which took effect. Mr. Harris lingered but a few hours and died in great pain. He was a member of the Methodist church and an upright Christian gentleman, as was evinced by the many sad hearts that attended his funeral, both white and colored. The negro, Nick Nutting, was arrested and placed in jail. At the announcement of the death of Mr. Harris great excitement prevailed in Forsyth and only by the cool heads of her citizens was Nutting saved from being lynched. He will not doubt pay the penalty of his crime upon the gallows in a short while.
