Thurmond, nee Buff, second wife of William H. Thurmond, late of Monroe county, was born October 24, 1843, a little over 76 years ago, in a humble country home near Hickory Grove church, Houston county, Georgia. In that home she was a central figure that gladdened it; an obedient and loving daughter; a kind and considerate sister, never too tired to lend a helping hand to any one in trouble; ever waiting and watching through the long weary hours of night if any be sick. She was converted and joined the Methodist church, South, in her early womanhood, and was a faithful and consistent member of that communion to the day of her death, which occurred on Sunday night, Feb. 22, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. B. Green, Lenoir City, Tenn., passing from a mortal to an immortal life in the realms of eternal peace and happiness. She was buried at the Thurmond cemetery near Forsyth Tuesday, Feb. 24, at noon in the presence of a large crowd of friends and relatives, who were present to lend assistance and sympathy, notwithstanding the cold disagreeable weather. It is needless to say she was a most estimable woman and highly remarkable for her patience and unselfish spirit in the home, devoted, true and faithful to her husband up to the hour of his death, which occurred August 28, 1905, in his 83rd year. She was kind to her neighbors, thoughtful of strangers, exceedingly liberal in her hospitality, and had a high regard for ministers of the gospel of all denominations. As a true and devoted wife, an affectionate and kind mother, a good neighbor and friend to all, she had few equals. To sum up her noble life as a christian and good woman, she was known far and wide for her noble traits of character and will be sadly missed in her community. [The previous sentence was mistakenly printed again in the original newspaper publication.] She was confined to the bed of affliction for several months previous to her death, but in all that time of intense pain and suffering, she bore it with patience and Christian courage; never complaining, saying, "Let God's will be done." Well, she is through with her suffering now, and has gone home to rest with her Savior in Heaven's beautiful land, where it will be so sweet and happy for us all to meet ["sweet and happy for us to meet" was repeated in the original newspaper publication] together again. God bless the friends, the relatives and children and grand-children. She has left, adn [sic] help them all to "so live" that thre [sic] shall be happy reunion in the world to come, that will never be saddened or broken, is my earnest prayer and sincere wish. -William D.
