H. Thurmond, one of Monroe county's old pioneer citizenes, died at his home near the city Monday at the advanced age of eighty-three. He had been in ill-health for some time and his death was not unexpected. Around his bedside as he passed into eternity, were gathered seventeen children, who as they watched the death shadow steal over his loved and venerable face, could testify to his nobility as a father. He was the father of twenty children, eighteen of whom survive him. He was a public-spirited man of broad and noble character, highly respected by all, and his death is deeply regretted. He was a member of the Methodist church. The funeral service was conducted at his residence by Rev. J. B. Holland, Tuesday evening. To the bereaved we extend sympathy.
