Note from Robert N. Hale (emhale@ix.netcom.com): He was discharged from duty due to a Kidney Infection, (Brights Disease) 14 July 1862 in Richmond and given pay and transportation pay back to Madison. I have copies of all of his papers. 29 September 1863 he in listed as a Private in Hanleiter's Co. Ga. Light Artillery, Army of Tennessee, Aug. 1864 Appointed 8th Sgt., October 1864 Appointed 4th Sgt., 31 Oct. 1864 Last Roll on file shows him present. I believe that he made it all the way and surrendered with the Army of Tenn. Though his obit that follows states he was killed Nov. 9, his family bible, that is in my possession, states that he died the 7th of November confirmed by his grave marker in the Almand/LaBoon Family Cemetery near Good Hope. Born in Morgan County 27 May 1837 and died there on November 7, 1896. Married in Walton County on the 10th of September 1867 to Sarah Frances LaBoon Obituary as found in the Minutes of the Confederate Veteran Association Year Book located in the Morgan County Probate Judge's office, now in the Morgan County Archives: Comrade Almand enlisted in the Confederate Army as a private in Co. I, 44th Regiment, Georgia Volunteers. His Company was commanded by the lamented Charles W. Alliston. They reached the Army of Northern Virginia just in time to participate in the glorious victories of the seven days fighting around Richmond. Some time after he was honorably discharged on account of ill health. Regaining his health, at least to some degree, he again enlisted in Hanleiter's Battery of Light Artillery and served on the coast of Georgia. He was accidentally killed by being thrown from his buggy in the City of Madison on the 9th day of November 1896. As a Neighbor he was un-excelled by anyone, taking a deep interest in the welfare of all those who live near him, often neglecting his own business to serve others, generally the first to discover sickness and want in his community, and prompt and generous in contributing to their relief. A deep sympathizer with those in necessity, his home was an asylum where the wayfaring always found relief from hunger and a place to lay their heads. He was the incarnation of charity and genuine hospitality. If he ever injured any mortal man, that man was himself. Peace to his ashes. H.C.Fear. Robert N.
