Morgan-Floyd-Carroll County GaArchives Military Records.....War Of 1812, Morgan County Georgia Militia September 19, 1812 Warof1812 - Rosters First Class of Hogg's Battalion Morgan Co. GA Militia ************************************************ Copyright. Duke dend@alltel.net May 31, 2005, 12:08 pm Roster, Maj. Thomas Hogg's Battalion This was taken from the Georgia Military Affairs Volume 3, 12 June 1810 - 24 November 1813. It can be found at the Georgia Archives in Morrow. The book also included the returns of the 2nd and 3rd Class (1813 and 1814). A handwritten note on the page indicated this unit may have been the "29th Regt." and was "commissioned orig. Sept. 19, 1812." I've transcribed each page that had one of my ancestors and it effectively documents at least a third of a very large unit. The diary of Thomas Davis puts the unit at the battles of Autosee, Tallasee and Ft. Defiance, Al. A Duke family legend is that my 2x great grandfather, the first of two Charles Dukes in the unit, was wounded at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, Alabama with Andrew Jackson and Sam Houston. If true, this unit would have been in that battle. The likely reality is that the wound occurred at Ft. Defiance when General John Floyd attempted to link up with Andrew Jackson. Following a bloody US victory at Ft. Defiance, Jackson and Floyd saw no reason to link forces. Jackson went on to Horseshoe Bend in the following weeks. Floyd returned to Georgia to command the defense of Savannah. Maj. Thomas Hogg's Battalion 1. Lewis Brantley, Captain 2. Greene Haynes, Lieutt 3. John Maze 4. William Cook 5. Jeremiah Deane 6.
