She attended G.S.C.W. and taught school for one year before her marriage in 1925 to James Love Atkinson of Greensboro. The couple lived in Monroe from 1927 until 1950 at which time they returned to Madison to spend their retirement years. Mr. Atkinson owned and operated the Madison Freezer Locker Plant before his death in 1973. As a member of Madison Baptist Church, Mrs. Atkinson served in many capacities throughout the years. She was a member of Daniel Morgan Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and Henry Walton Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution in Madison and Ingoli Garden Club and the Interest Group, Mulberry Street United Methodist Church in Macon. In 1995 Mrs. Atkinson moved to Macon where she lived with her daughter, Eddings A. Smith until August 2006. She is survived by her only child, Eddings A. Smith of Macon, two grandsons and their families of Macon, Lewis Y. Smith Jr. and wife, Deborah; and James A. Smith and wife, Ann; and four great-grandsons, Lewis Young Smith III, Edward Alexander Smith, James Atkinson Smith Jr., and Nicholas Edward Smith. Graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 5, in Madison's Fairview Cemetery with Dr. James Ross officiating. A.E. Carter Funeral Home was in charge of interment.
