Mis Epps, Teacher, Dies Here 

Miss Pearl Epps, who formany years taught history in Madison and later served 
as librarian at Madison High School, died Saturday, January 28th, at Morgan 
Memorial Hospital after an illness of several months.  Miss Epps, a brilliant 
scholar, continued to read and study until she became ill a few weeks ago. 

The daughter of W.P.H. Epps and Mrs. Emma Lester Epps, she was born on her 
grandfather's plantation in Clarke County.  She moved to Madison as a child of 
eleven and continued her education in private schools here.  She was graduated 
from State Normal School in Athens and the University of Georgia. She also 
studied at colleges in Knoxville and AShville. 

She taught history at Madison Elementary and Madison High School for many 
years.  Later she became librarian at Madison High School, retiring in 1939.  
After that she oftimes helped her sister, Miss Mattie Lou Epps, as long as she 
had her milinary shop in downtown Madison. 

She was  a member of the Baptist Church and the U.D.C.  She is survived by two 
sisters, Miss Mattie Lou Epps and Mrs. Wade Rhodes, both of Madison. 
Funeral services were held at the graveside at Madison Cemetery at three p.m.  
Sunday afternoon.  The Rev. Tucker Singleton, pastor of Madison Baptist Church, 
officiated.  W. C. Hemperley Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
