J. LAWRENCE PASED AWAY MONDAY NIGHT Morgan county lost a valuable citizen when Jerry Lawrence passed away at his home about seven miles from Madison Monday night. Mr. Lawrence was a native of Morgan county, having been born during December, 1865. His parents were Mrs. Mary E. and Mr. E. H. Lawrence. His mother's maiden name was Miss Mary E. Harwell. He grew to manhood in the neighborhood in which he spent his last days; attended the local schools and was popular with his playmates. After reaching manhood Mr. Lawrence spent several years at West Point, Ga., where he engaged in business. Later, returning to Madison, he was for several years assocated with the H. H. Fitzpatrick Co. His health failing, he retired to his farm where he hoped to improve his physical condition. That dreaded malady, Bright's disease, had fastened itself upon him, however, and he succumbed to its ravages. The funeral was held in the family burial ground, Fairview cemetery, this city, Wednesday afternoon at 4 o'clock, conducted by his pastor, Rev. Mr. Jones, of Godfrey, assisted by Rev. R. L. Bolton, of the Madison Baptist church. Mrs. Louise Nail, Mrs. Mary C. Ware and C. M. Furlow sang "how Firm a Foundation" and "Over There." The minister paid a just tribute to the life and character of the deceased, who was a member of Antioch Baptist church and a Mason. A great many friends and relatives attended. The floral offerings were beautiful, and the pall bearers were taken from his former business associates and friends. Jerry Lawrence had never married. He lived a quiet, unostentatious life, free from guile, same and hypocrisy. He loved God and his fellowman. Faults he may have had, but his virtues far outweighed his vices. Surviving him are three brothers, and two sisters -- J. E. Lawrence, Ollie and Walter Lawrence, of Morgan county, Mrs. Sherwood Atkinson of Norwood, and Mrs. Sisson, of Denver, Col. There have the sympathies of many friends, who loved their brother for his many splendid traits of character.
