Son of Geroge Henry Turnell and Martha Sansom) The thin gray lines of the Confederate army are gradually growing thinner, as one by one the old soldiers answer the final roll call on eternity's camping ground. The passing away of Mr. John T. Turnell occurred Tuesday afternoon at the Tabernacle Infirmary, Atlanta from a stroke of paralysis and account of which appeared in last week's Madisonian. The remains were brought to Madison Tuesday night, and the funeral occurred from the home of his brother Mr. S. A. Turnell, Wednesday afternoon at three o'clock, conducted by Rev. J. H. Mashburn, assisted by Rev. J. H. Gunn and Re. M H. Eakes. Mr. Mashburn read the twelfth chapter of Ecclesiastes and paid a worthy tribute to the deceased brother. The choir sang "Come, ye Disconsolate," "Abide with Me," and "Savior, More than Life to Me." Mr. Gunn and Mr. Eakes offered earnest and touching prayers. The pall bearers were Messrs. B. T. McHugh, P. S. Burney, J. H. Holland, E.B. Fitzpatrick, J. S. Leak and A. P Richter. There were many beautiful flowers, tokens of esteem from surviving friends. John Thomas Turnell was the eldest son of George Henry and Martha Turnell and was born in what is now Oconee County, Feb. 22, 1843. In early life he married Miss Marable, of Oconee county. To them was born a daughter, Miss Bessie Turnell, who lives in Gainesville. his first wife died many years ago. He was married to Miss Callie E. Thomas, of Morgan county who with two sons, Claude of New Jersey, and George of Atlanta, survive him. He leaves three brothers, Messrs. Jack, Steve and Joe Turnell and four sisters, Mrs. Liza Bearden, Mrs. W. H. Butts, Mrs. A. H. Mallory and Miss Clem Turnell. Mr. Turnell was a brave and true Confederate soldier, serving through out the four years as a member of Company L. Clark Rifles, Third GA Regiment. His comrades give abundant testimony to his valiant service. The deceased was one of the oldest and most highly esteemed residents of this city, having been connected for nearly two score years with the business houses of his brothers. Though quiet, modest and retiring in his disposition, he was exceedingly kind, gentle and unselfish in his nature. He was a member of the Madison Methodist Church. But his earthly career is over and he has gone to receive the reward of a well spent life. Submitted by Pat Colbert, Evans, GA
