Tony was the son of Antonino Spanó and Anna Sciacchitano of Lipari, Italy. He is buried in the family plot in Riverdale Cemetery (section 3, lot 24). He married Angela Martello in 1891 in Lipari. Angela was born December 24, 1877, the daughter of Antonino Martello and Angela Della Chiesa, and died on June 16, 1923 in Columbus. She is buried beside Antonio. Tony and Angela emigrated to the United States in 1895. They located in Apalachicola, Florida with Tony’s uncle, Salvadore. In 1908 they moved to Columbus, Georgia, where Tony opened a Shoe Shop at 1013 1st Ave. He also sold vegetables and fruits in front of the shoe shop. They lived at 716 3rd Avenue. They had ten children. The first three were born in Lipari, the next five in Apalachicola and the last two in Columbus. About 1929 Tony married the former Camilla Harp. Camilla was the daughter of Henry and Dixie Harp. Camilla was divorced from Elmer Dockery of Chicago. Camilla had a son, Albert R. Dockery, born April 17, 1924. The family did not approve of this marriage and never acknowledged Camilla or Albert. I have been unable to find what happened to Camilla after Antonio’s death. Albert was apparently raised by his grandmother. He died in April, 1984, in Columbus. Additional Comments: Very little is known of Antonino Spanó, the father of Antonio Spano. He was the son of Angelo Spanó and Vincenza Lo Giudice of Lipari. He married Anna Sciacchitano on January 09, 1867 in Lipari according to church records there. Anna was the daughter of Angelo Sciacchitano and Anna Iacono. Anna was born March 3, 1831 in Lipari and died July 30, 1936 in Ensley, Alabama. They had one daughter and five sons. The daughter, Vincenza, died at about the age of 20 of a stomach tumor. The five sons all emigrated to the United States in the 1890s. Antonino had two brothers that I have been able to identify. They were Salvador Spanó and Giuseppe Spanó. Giuseppe married Concetta Pittari on February 28, 1870 in Lingua, Salina, Italy. Concetta Pittari was the daughter of Giuseppe Pittari and Caterina Coma. That is all that is known of Giuseppe Spanó at this time. The five sons of Antonino Spanó and Anna Sciacchitano were Salvadore, Nicola, Bartolomeo. Angelo and Antonio. Angelo and Antonio settled in Columbus, Ga., Salvadore and Bartolomeo settled in Birmingham, and Nicola remained in Apalachicola. excerpted from SPANO OF APALACHICOLA, FL, COLUMBUS, GA AND BIRMINGHAM, AL copyright 2003, Robert Spano This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 3.1 Kb
