Andrew Jackson Howard, pioneer citizen of Russell County, was born March 23, 1865, in Georgia according to the Howard Family Bible. His grave and death certificate stated born March 21, 1865. At the age of five in 1870, he is in the household of Pamela Howard, widow of John Howard in Columbus, Georgia. His parents may have died in the last Battle of the Civil War fought in Columbus, Georgia. According to the Census his father was born in Virginia and mother was born in Georgia. In 1880 Pamela and Andrew are living in Girard in the home of John M. and Sarah Emiline Howard Collins. Sarah's parents: James H. and Emiline White Howard; married 12/20/1848 in Columbus, Georgia. Her siblings: Joseph A., Cornelia, William B., James M., Daniel Y., Charles W., Caroline, George W. Howard and unnamed male Howard. In 1880 at age of 15 Andrew was hauling wood. In 1884 he was employed by the Eagle and Phenix Mills. Andrew married Josephine "Josie" Smith on June 26, 1884 in Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia. Josie was born May 21, 1866, NC. Josie's mother was the widow, Elizabeth J. Marsh Smith from Surry County, NC and Josie's father was Jonathan Smith born Alabama. "Lizzie" married John E. Brown 4/29/1900 Columbus; Died 8/29/1900 in Girard; buried Girard Cemetery beside Mrs. A. J. Howard. In 1901 they purchased their home on 13th Street. Andrew's First Child: Warner Joel Howard born 05/22/1886 in Girard; died 01/30/1956; married first wife, Mary E. Vinson, 8/11/1906. One child: Edna Lavona Howard born 10/12/1908, Girard; died 01/13/1909; Warner divorced Mary on 07/11/1914; married second 06/26/1915, Christian Evelyn Franklin, born 12/02/1894, Butler, Georgia; died 8/30/1973. Parents of four children: One: Evelyn Marguerie Howard born 04/18/1916 Phenix City; married 12/21/1946 Willliam Herbert Boswell born 05/16/1917, son of John Moses Boswell and Winnie Lee Burkes; died 05/24/1980; buried Lakeview Memory Gardens, Phenix City. First child: William Michale Boswell born 10/30/1949; married on 02/03/1973 to Catherine Dale Dudley. Two children: Jodi Lynn Boswell was born 06/02/1978 and Jan Marie Boswell was born 12/10/1980. Second child: Christine Evelyn Boswell was born 11/19/1951. Two: Warner Joel Howard Jr., born 07/17/1918 in Phenix City; died on 03/10/1968; buried Parkhill Cemetery, Columbus; married first, Elizabeth Anthony; married second, Mildred Carter and adopted William Kenneth Howard who married to Pamela Ellen Tillman on 02/22/1968 at St. Paul Methodist Church, Columbus, Georgia. Children: Julia Patricia Howard was born on 04/26/1971; Jennifer Ann Howard was born on 08/07/1975. Three: Mildred Lucile Howard was born on 08/17/1920 in Ft. Mitchell, Alabama; married to Homer Lee Hightower on 07/18/1942 in Portsmouth, Virginia; Homer was born 09/11/1917, son of Homer Lee Hightower and Mittie Voncell Johnson. Homer retired from Lummus Industries on 01/02/1980. Mildred retired from CBT on 03/15/1983 with 30 years of service. They are members of Lakewood Baptist Church in Phenix City, Alabama. Four: Charles Orten Howard was born on 11/24/1921 in Phenix City; died on 04/03/1974; married first Mary Johnston in 1940; adopted Diane Howard; married second Helen Boswell Thompson; married Juanita Bentley Hanson; her son, Frankie Hanson. Charles was a Mason and OES member. Andrew's Second Child: Bessie Louise Howard was born 07/19/1888 in Girard; died on 04/06/1954 in Phenix City; married Charles "Pat" Brewster Murphy on 11/01/1908 in Columbus, Georgia. "Pat" was born on 03/14/1881 in Verbena, Alabama; son of John Milton Murphy and Mary Ottis Costley; "Pat" died on 02/26/1945 in Phenix City; both buried Riverdale Cemetery, Columbus, Georgia. They built a large brick home and lived at 1701 14th Street near their business, Pat's Cafe. One daughter: Patricia Ottis Josephine Murphy born on 04/21/1910 at Girard; died on 11/21/1981 in Columbus, Georgia; married John Allen Dodd on 10/31/1931 in Carrollton, Alabama; John born on 12/19/1908 in Double Springs, Alabama; son of Rufus Irving Dodd and Willena E. Allen; died 04/23/1956 in Phenix City; both are buried in Riverdale Cemetery. They had three children: Patricia Ann Dodd married Robert Otis Greathouse, Barbara Allen Dodd married William Morris Galloway and John Allen Dodd, II married Frances Elaine Pearrow. Andrew's Third Child: Louie Jackson Howard (07/09/1892-05/07/1941); Mason; buried in Girard Cemetery; married Vera Johnston (09/28/1896-10/12/1975), buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Whittier, California, daughter of Jimmy Johnston and Ophelia Murphy, brother: Oscar Cecil Johnston; Ophelia married Albert West. Three children: First: Margaret Evelyn (01/09/1915-04/22/1955), Girard, buried Rose Hill Cemetery, Whittier, California, married Morris D. Davis; son, Morris D. Davis, Jr. Second: Helen Lameril born 09/10/1916 Columbus; married several times and Gerald Poncy, now lives Phoenix, Arizona. Third: Louie Jackson, Jr. (changed name to Louie Cecil) 04/08/1921, Girard; enlisted WWII 1941-1946; Private to 1st Lt; married 07/11/1953, Norwalk, California to Vivian D. Dodson born 02/25/1924 Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; died 04/04/1997, Placentia, California, buried Loma Vista Cemetery, Fullerton, California. Two daughters: Mary Viann born 08/16/1954 Los Angles, California; married Alan Sanders August, 1975, Placentia, California; Nancy Lou born 03/01/1959, Los Angles, California. Andrew's Fourth Child: Minnie Pearl Howard born 06/01/1894 Girard; died January 27, 1973 Atlanta, Georgia; buried Hillcrest Cemetery, Atlanta; married John "Bertie" Burt Ellison 05/16/1914; John born 02/27/1889 Tennessee; buried in the Magnolia Cemetery, Atlanta, Georgia; son of Charles A. Ellison and Georgia Ann Pounds. Four children: One: Eleanor Elizabeth (07/02/1915-03/07/1995) Russell County; buried Parkhill Cemetery, Columbus; married first, Leon Booker; married second, Oscar Kennington. Two: Theda Geraldine "Jere" 02/04/1917 Russell County; married Cecil Arthur Comer 07/03/1948 Phenix City. Three: Doris Ann born 12/11/1920, Durham, North Carolina; married Albert McGee Knight 06/08/1938, Congers, Georgia; born 07/29/1914, son of Augustus Almond Knight and Lillie Mae Jones. Three children: Jerry Ann born 03/21/1939 Georgia; married third, Bob Fain, 1992 or 1993. Albert McGee, Jr. born 02/25/1941 Georgia; married 02/14/1971, Barbara Freeman. Two children: Michael and Chris both born Georgia. Judy Gail born 04/03/1949 Georgia; married Noel Eugene Whitwood. Two children: Wendy Gail born 06/30/1971, Georgia and Dean Wesley born 1972 Georgia. Four: Syble Juanita born about 1924 Georgia; died 1924; age 9 months. Andrew Jackson died February 26, 1938 at the home of Bessie Howard Murphy and Josie died October 13, 1928; both buried in Girard Cemetery in Phenix City, Alabama.
