Attended private schools and graduated from The College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1820; subsequently studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1822 and began his practice in Clinton, Jones County, Ga. Democrat. Member of Georgia state legislature; state court judge; U.S. Representative from Georgia 2nd District, 1847-49; Elected to State House of Representatives 1827-1830; moved to Columbus, Muscogee County, Ga., in 1830 and continued the practice of law. Served as Judge of the State Superior Court 1835-1837; member, State senate 1843-1844; presidential elector on the Democratic ticket in 1844; elected as a Democrat to the Thirtieth Congress (March 4, 1847-March 3, 1849); Muscogee County 1840 Census: Alfred (male 30-39) 1 son 5-9; 1 son 10-14; dau 0-4; dau 5-9; dau 10-14; wife 30-39 Served as judge of the State Superior Court 1850-1854 for another 4 years until his election to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1855, to January 28, 1861, when he withdrew to return to the South. During his terms he served as chairman, Committee on Claims in both the 35th and 36th Congresses). He resumed the practice of law in Columbus, Ga., until 1868, when he purchased a plantation in East Macon, (Bibb Co) Ga., and engaged in agricultural pursuits until his death.
