Portis was born in North Carolina Aug 22, 1800. He lived in Hardeman Co, Tennessee and Tippah County Mississippi. He married three times 1)? Gasaway 2) Tofleroy Ross Flouroy 3) Sarah M. Burns He had four children by his first and second wives: 1) Benjamin Hopkins W. Portis 2) William Gassaway Portis 3) James Parnell Portis, Jr. 4) Addison Portis By the Third wife: 1) Mary Elinor Portis 2) James Hopkins Portis, 3) William Peter Portis (a female called Willie) James P. Portis was Muscogee County Sheriff in 1827. 1825 he was in Upson County. In Arkansas he was a member of the legislature before the Civil War and died in Tippah county MS, in 1880. Additional note: Mr. Portis did a lot of legal work where land was concerned. I think he acted for people in Upson.
