This per his statement in his pension application. His parents were Joshua John Scurlock and Elizabeth B. Norman. William moved with his family to the North Carolina Province. He was living in the area of Wilkes County when that county was created in 1777. War came to the colonies in 1775. At that time William was about 15 years of age. On December 9, 1777, the North Carolina General Assembly created Wilkes County and its regiment of Militia. All officers were appointed and commissioned by the Governor. William entered service with the Wilkes County Regiment, North Carolina Militia in 1779. He made this statement in his pension application. I was living near Wilkes Court House, North Carolina, when I first entered the service. From the pension application made by William in Georgia. He states the following: He volunteered in 1779, under Captain Ab. De Moss, Major Fr. Hargrove & Colonel Benjamin Cleveland, at Wilkes Court House, in North Carolina; was stationed at that place for one month; after which he was stationed in Salem, in said State, for two months: & was then discharged, at the last place. In the spring of 1780, he again entered the service, as a volunteer, at the same place, & under the same officers; & served three months, at Cryder's Fort, & at Ramsay's Mills In 1780, he again entered the service, as a volunteer, at Halifax Court House, Virginia under Captain William McDonald, marched into North Carolina, & joined General Greene's Army, at Boyd's ferry, on Dan River. He continued with General Greene, until at High-rock Ford, on Haw River, he was detached, & placed under the command of Captain William Sloan, Major Joseph Hearn, & Colonel Cleveland. William was placed back with the Wilkes County, North Carolina Regiment . He was then stationed successively at Salisbury, Salem, Colonel William Lewis's on Yadkin River. This tour of service continued for six months. After the end of the Revolutionary War William moved to Georgia. William states in his pension application that he had lived in Georgia since 1783 From his pension he made this statement: I have lived since the revolutionary war in the counties of Wilkes, Hancock and Baldwin. He moved from Wilkes County to Hancock County where he was married in 1790 to Rhoda Simmons whose family had lived in Wake County, North Carolina. William removed to Baldwin County, Georgia before 1820. He was a fortunate drawer in the 1827 Georgia Land Lottery, He was living in Baldwin County at the time. The land lot was in District 22 of Muscogee County. 2 22 33 Scurlock, William jr. Baldwin County Reddings Muscogee County Talbot County, Georgia was established December 1827, created from parts of Muscogee "Original" county. The land lot that he won in the land lottery was Lot 33 in District 22 in Muscogee County original and would be in Talbot County after the creation of that county. William had other land holdings in Talbot County as evidenced by the following record. pg 109 19 Oct 1833 Phillip Adams to William Scurlock Senior (Baldwin Co) $1600 (405 acres) LL153 + LL136 (Dist not named) R.G. Crittenden, JIC, John Fleming, JP,C.R. Wynn, JP Recorded 4th Nov 1833 He made his application for a pension for service in the Revolutionary War in Baldwin County, Georgia on 13 Oct 1833. He is on the 1830 census in Baldwin County. In 1833, William was receiving his pension. Revolutionary War pension payment ledgers claims he died about 1834/35. Per his last will and testament filed in Muscogee County, Georgia in Aug of 1840 William was still alive at that time. He was living at the residence of his son, John Scurlock in Muscogee County. This was in District 774, Steam Mill. In his last illness he had been living there about a month. He did not return to his own residence. He named as legatees his wife Rhoda Scurlock and his daughter, Caroline Matilda Scurlock Files. His Will was proved in court in Jan of 1841. Note that Buster Wright's "Burials and Deaths Reported in the Columbus (Georgia) Enquirer [Newspaper], 1832-1872" (1984), p. 420, shows: William SCURLOCK, Sr., a Revolutionary soldier, died 02 SEP 1840, aged 81 years, in Muscogee County, Georgia (published 30 SEP 1840) [no mention of where he was buried]. The exact location of his place of burial has not yet been determined with evidence. He may have been buried on his land in Talbot County or in Muscogee County where his son lived. There is a find a grave memorial for him that indicates he died in Muscogee County as well. Sources for that information have not been verified. William and his wife Rhoda had the following known children: Catherine (Kitty) b.1792, Winifred b.1794,William b.1796,Joshua Gordon b.1797, Daniel Norman b.1799, John b. 1802, Priestly Norman b.1806, Elizabeth b. 1810, Caroline Matilda b.1811 Additional Comments: His wife, Rhoda was living in Russell County, Alabama with her daughter, Catherine Collins in 1850.
