STEWART to George HARGRAVES, Sr., 08 NOV 1842, recorded18 NOV 1842, Muscogee County, Georgia, Deed Book B, pp. 523-24: “…also the following described Negroes [slaves] viz: Polly a woman and her infant child; Bill a Boy of about twelve years old; Lewis a boy about eleven years old; Barney a boy about eight years old; Hester a girl of about four years old; Mack a man about forty years old; Anna his wife about thirty years old; Frances a girl about eight years old; Caroline a Woman about eighteen years old & her child; Chaney a woman about twenty years old; Elbert a man about thirty eight years old; Jerry a boy about eighteen years old; and Nelly a woman about forty five years old.” STEWART was using his assets including his three-eighths interest in all of the Clapp’s Factory property, his residence (situated on city lots #59 and #60), part of city lot #32, and his slaves as collateral on a loan of $5000. There is no indication that any of these slaves was associated directly with Clapp’s Factory. I don’t have any further information on the slaves, but thought this might be of use or interest to someone on the list. I do have further material on the STEWART and HARGRAVES families I will be glad to share (George was probably Charles’ brother-in- law).
