Sworn to and subscribed before me, this 3rd day of Sept, 1907 William Redd, Jr The 1st City Battalion (Columbus), or Jaques’ Battalion, was formed under Samuel JAQUES as a home guard unit in Muscogee County. Company “F,” under Captain Joseph ROBERTS, was probably made up of men working at the Eagle Factory in Columbus who were responsible for defending the mill. Reuben Martin Van Buren COULTER enlisted June 1862 at Columbus in Company F, Jaques’ Battalion. R. M. V. COULTER filed in 1907 for an indigent pension for this service and the same year was also a witness on the pension application of Wm. H. HILL, who served in Company F. Reuben Martin Van Buren COULTER (06 MAR 1844 Monroe Co, GA – 25 MAR 1915) m. in Taylor Co, GA, to Nancy A. GOODALE (1843 GA – 23 JUL 1929 Russell Co, AL). LDS IGI NA shows two different mg. dates of 06 JUN 1867 and 09 JUN 1867…perhaps one of these is the license date and one the actual marriage date. Their daughter Theodosia Gertrude COULTER (21 DEC 1874 of Columbus, Muscogee Co, GA – 07 MAR 1943), m. 07 NOV 1896 in Columbus, Muscogee Co, GA, to William Robert McCANN. Mrs. Nancy [A.] (GOODALE) COULTER applied for a widow’s pension on 30 APR 1915 as resident of Muscogee Co, GA. She m. 09 JUN 1867 Taylor Co, GA, to R. M. V. COULTER, who d. MAR 1915 as resident of Muscogee Co, GA, and had served in Co F, Jaques Battalion. – affidavit signed by Geo. J. BURRUS & M. M. MOORE. [can’t find either of these men listed on the Civil War Soldiers & Sailors System. George J. BURRUS, Sr., was a writer and something of a local historian; he worked at the Springer Opera House in 1876 (see “Columbus on the Chattahoochee,” by Etta B. WORSLEY, p. 361), and is apparently the George BURRIS, a clerk, on p. 574B of the 1880 census of Columbus. The latter is evidently Montague Montgomery MOORE, who served as Clerk of the City Council from 06 JUL 1863 until his death on 04 NOV 1920 (see WORLSEY, p. 459). He appears on p. 571D in Columbus in 1880.] The following men served in Company D, “Grant Factory Guards,” 19th Battalion (also known as Thompson’s Battalion), formed in July or August 1863, reportedly for a period of six months, under Lieutenant Colonel Dexter B. THOMPSON. The captain of Company D was John J. GRANT, proprietor of the Grant Factory (evidently the same as the Coweta Falls Factory): T. F. COLTER entered and separated as a Private in Company D, 19th Battalion. [Frederick F. COULTER m. 31 DEC 1861 to Emaline A. HILL ("History of Columbus, GA, 1827-1865," by John H. MARTIN, vol. 2, p. 146. How is Emaline kin to William Henry HILL? Note also that this HILL family is kin to the COLE family mentioned in my OLIVE query.] Van COLTER entered and separated as a Private in Company D, 19th Battalion. Many of the same men served in the 1st City Battalion and the 19th Battalion. I believe Van is the same as Reuben Martin Van Buren. I do not find any COLTER or COULTER listed in the 1859-60 city directory of Columbus or in the published index to the 1860 census of Muscogee County. On the 1880 census of Brownville, Lee Co, AL, p. 293A (among cotton mill working families): COULTER, Nancy/self/married/female/white/38/GA/keeping house/England/SC COULTER, Smith/son/single/male/white/11/GA/at home/GA/GA COULTER, Theodosia G./dau./single/female/white/6/AL/[blank]/GA/GA COULTER, Rueben M./son/single/male//white/4/AL/[blank]/GA/GA COULTER, Augustus E./son/single/male/white/2/AL/[blank]/GA/GA Note that she is married, and we know he d. 1915 and she survived him – where is he in 1880? Buried at Linwood Cemetery in Columbus: Thomas L. COULTER (19 NOV 1836 – 24 APR 1885) – more on him may be found in the LDS IGI NA.
