Muscogee COUNTY GA Indian Wars Roster - The Columbus Guards File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Jerry Jones http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/muscogee/military/indian/roster.txt Transcribed from Georgia State Archives - Atlanta CREEK INDIAN WAR The Columbus Guards History: Organized as a volunteer company before May, 1835 in Columbus as a defence against the hostile Alabama Creek Indians who threatened citizens by coming across the Chattahoochee river into Georgia. The original plan was to have companies of ten men each under a captain. When the Creek Indian War began in 1836 The Columbus Guards were under Major General Daniel McDougald. Became part of the United States Military (federal) on January 1, 1836 and discharged Septmeber 1, 1836. Note: Macon Messenger, April 25, 1835 refers to the existence of Columbus Guards. There were other companies as well, i.e. Capt Coleman 67 drafted men; Captain Evans 70 Cadet Riflemen; Capt. VOLUNTEER COMPANIES. 1835 Vol. 1 -- Page: 289 Sequential Number: 168 Full Title: AN ACT to incorporate the Columbus Guards, and to extend to them certain privileges. Sec. 1. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Georgia in General Assembly met, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the same, That the several persons and members of the association formed at Columbus, in this State, under the name and style of the Columbus Guards, and others who may become members of said association, and the successors, officers and members of the same, shall be, and they are hereby declared to be a body corporate, by the name and style aforesaid; and by said name shall have perpetual succession of officers and members, with power to make, alter, change and amend such by-laws and regulations as may be agreed on by the officers and members of said association: Provided, such by-laws and regulations be not contrary to the laws and constitution of this State; that they shall be exempt from all battalion and general musters, except such as are ordered by and under the immediate authority of the Governor and commander-in-chief: Provided also, that nothing contained in this act shall be so construed as to exempt the said association from the liability of other militia of this State, on any emergency which authorizes calling out the militia for the suppressing of insurrection, or for repelling invasion. Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the Columbus Guards be, and they are hereby authorized to elect a fourth lieutenant, and are placed upon the same footing, in reference to the number of officers, as if upon the war establishment; and the Governor is authorized to commission such officers, any law to the contrary notwithstanding.
