Two persons were killed and a number were badly shocked in an electrical storm which visited Columbus, Ga., a few minutes after 4 o’clock Sunday afternoon. The dead are: John J. Willis, of Columbus and Louis McLane, of Phenix City. Mr. Williams (Willis?) was about 55 years old and was formerly watchman at the upper foot bridge. He was standing in front of his residence on the sidewalk, talking to a friend when suddenly there was a loud peal of thunder and almost simultaneously Mr. Willis was struck by a bolt of lightning. The noise was almost deafening, sounding to those on the front porch like the report of a cannon, and a man who was looking at Mr. Willis when he was killed said that he saw no flash, but something like smoke in the wake of the lightning bolt. Simultaneously in Phenix City, a few blocks away, lightning killed Louis Lane, a young man about 20 years old who had been married only a few months. He was in the back yard of his residence resting his hands on a clothes wire when lighting struck the wire. He was killed instantly, but was not mangled in anyway. The Marion County Patriot Friday, August 22, 1902 Page Four Methodist Class 1854 In the current issue of the Wesleyan Christian Advocate appears the first installment of a sketch of the class of the Methodist conference of 1854, written by Rev. Geo. G.N. MacDonell, the presiding elder of the Columbus district of the Methodist church. The class of young ministers admitted to the church in 1854 was an unusually large one, numbering 23 members. Rev. Mr. MacDonell says that only one class, that of 1858, when 27 young preachers were admitted was larger than this. This class of ’54 furnished to the Methodist church a number of men destined to become widely known, among them being Bishop Fitzgerald. It may be of interest to know that Bishop Fitzgerald was formerly a printer, and admits that he still has a taste for journalism. The article is written in Rev. Mr. MacDonell’s usual lucid, interesting style. He himself was a member of that class, and hence is well qualified to write sketches of its members. – Columbus Enquirer-Sun The Marion County Patriot Friday, August 22, 1902 Page Five Personal Mention Miss Grace Jester is visiting the Misses Hillman at Columbus.
