The condition of young Gus Gaines, shot by Mr. Sam Elliott on the Glade Road Saturday, continues about the same. He is very seriously hurt, but may recover. In a statement given out by Mr. Elliott’s relatives they say that the negro was to blame for the occurrence, and that his reckless driving and insulting manner was responsible for the shooting. Both parties shot, but Mr. Elliott was fortunate enough not to be hit. These are the first uniforms the Guards have received from the state since 1898. Another attempt was made to pull off the balloon ascension at Wildwood yesterday. The balloon rose a considerable distance, but could not pull the “aeronaut” from the ground, not having sufficient force. An aeronaut on terra firma is like a fish out of water. This balloon is evidently entirely satisfied with its present surroundings. ======================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be freely used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
