Muscogee COUNTY GA Newspaper Article March 22, 1903 File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Carla Miles milescng@juno.com http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/muscogee/newspapers/mar1903.txt The Columbus Enquirer-Sun Sunday, March 22, 1903 Fresh Vegetables in the City Market There is no reason now why every one should not “set a good table”. With plenty of spring vegetables in the market, and the price reasonable too, there is no necessity for one going hungry. Among the vegetables in the market yesterday were the following, which sold at the following prices: Beets, 10 cents a bunch Asparagus, 10 cents a bunch Cabbage, 5 and 10 cents a head Celery, 5 and 10 cents a stalk Onions, 1 and 2 bunches for 5 cents Lettuce, 5 and 10 cents a head Carrots, 5 cents a bunch Irish Potatoes, 30 cents a peck Sweet Potatoes, 30 cents a peck Tomatoes, 3 for 10 cents Tomatoes are very scarce now, but if the warm weather continues, plenty of them will be in the market in a few weeks. Eggs are selling for 15 cents a dozen. Frying size chickens are very scarce too, and even now they bring 35 cents and 40 cents each. Hens bring as much as 50 cents. The Columbus Enquirer-Sun Tuesday, April 7, 1903 A Great Rush for carrots by Ladies of City Carrots are selling in the market now at a premium since a recent lecture here to the women of the city, that they would improve the complexion, if eaten raw just before breakfast every morning. One lady bought all there was in the market yesterday and on her way home with it was offered as high as a dollar a bunch for them, but she refused saying that “money couldn’t buy them”. The farmers have orders ahead for all the carrots they will raise this season.
