Phelts is dangerously wounded, but has a good chance for recovery. This is the net result of the assault made on the Muscogee County jail at one o’clock this morning, when a mob tried to get Henry Taylor, a negro arrested three days ago on a charge of criminally assaulting a young girl. Kent, who resided in Phenix City, died at the city hospital at nine o’clock this morning of his wound. He was twenty-two years of age, a mill operative and unmarried. Jailer Phelts was struck by a bullet with such force that he was knocked known (down?). The bullet entered his chest, in the region of the lung but apparently not striking the lung. He fell backward and reached for his rifle. The police arrived and dispersed the mob. Mr. Phelts is fifty-three years old and has been jailer of Muscogee County fifteen years. This is the second mob he has faced, although hitherto no resort to firearms was made. Six or eight men were arrested, charged with being members of the mob, and five of them are still in jail. The Butler Herald Tuesday, February 28, 1911 Page Four State News Items If the recommendation of the Muscogee County grand jury is adopted the county will erect a monument over the grave of Jailer A.A. Phelts, who met his death early in December while defending the jail from a mob, and an appropriation of $1,000 will be made to his widow from the county fund. It is extremely likely that both recommendations will be followed.
