Hill vjbhill@alltel.net October 25, 2005, 10:55 am Columbus Enquirer-Sun, January 16, 1901 WAS ALMOST A CENTENARIAN ------- Mrs. Anice Bruce, Aged 94 Dies, Survived by 202 Children, Grand Children, etc. --------- Mrs. Anice Bruce, aged 94, who died at her house on Wildwood Drive, East Highlands, Monday evening, was buried yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Bruce, who has been quite feeble for a long time, died of of old age, it is stated. Mrs. Anice Barnhill Bruce was born in the year 1807, and consequently reached her 94th year. Her Mother, at the time of her death had reached the age of 111 years, and her eldest sister died at the age of 109. Mrs. Bruce moved to Georgia in 1837, and has been living around Columbus for the last thirty years. Her Mother's Family, which was of English stock, had nine children. It is thought that all of these are dead, except a sister, Mrs. Brown, who is thought to be living in Heard County, Georgia. Mrs. Bruce's family, itself, by this time had grown to rather a large size, as at the time of her death she had ten children, eighty-six grandchildren, ninety-nine great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren making a grand total of 202 persons. The eldest of Mrs. Bruce's children was George Bruce, who is now living near Birmingham, Ala. From him are descended eleven children, thirty-three grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Mrs. Bruce's second child was named Melissa. She had eleven children and thirty-nine grandchildren. It is not known whether she had any great grandchildren or any other grandchildren, but it is thought that there are others living. The family is now partly in Texas and partly here. This daughter died about ten or fifteen years ago. Another son, Lafayette Bruce, lives in Rochelle, Ga. He is the Father of ten children, but had no grandchildren. Mrs. Isabella Goodlett, who lives on East Highlands, is her daughter. Other children are Silas Bruce of near Chancel, Ga, Jackson Bruce of near Greensboro, Ala, William Bruce of Wetobeo, Texas, and Mrs. Lottie Cooper of Columbus. Recently an interesting picture was taken, showing Mrs. Bruce, her daughter, Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Ryckeley, of this city, a grand daughter, and Mrs. Ryckeley's infant son. Mrs. Bruce's Father was, it is thought, a soldier in the war of the Revolution; it is known that he was a soldier in the war of 1812. Mrs. Bruce's own recollections were very interesting. She remembered the four wars of the United States that happened during her life time--the war of 1812, the Indian war, the Civil war and the Spanish war. Mrs. Bruce frequently remarked that she was a grown woman before she saw a cooking stove. She remembered also seeing the first gin made in Georgia, and before that time she remembered picking the seed from the lint with her fingers carding and spinning it and weaving it into homespun. Mrs. Bruce was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church, and had been so for more than a half century.
