 Friends and relatives of Jefferson D. Davis were grieved by his sudden passing on
Saturday afternoon 
at his residence, 2344 Buena Vista Road.
	Davis was an outstanding member of his race in this part of the state for the past
40 years.  He 
was born April 28th, 1864 at Seale, Alabama.  He was educated in the public schools
of Columbus and 
at Tuskegee Institute.  He became a teacher in Stewart County at the age of sixteen
and taught there 
eight years until 1888.  He then became a principal of a Chattahoochee County school
and held this 
position twelve years until 1900. During the period of his teaching in Chattahoochee
County he was 
also the coroner.  For the next eight years until 1908 he was principal of the
Wynnton School in the 
Muscogee County school system.  From 1908 to his death he has held the positions of
principal and 
teacher in the Columbus public school system.  It is stated that during the last 54
years of his 57 years 
of teaching he never missed a day from the classroom because of illness.
	He became an ordained minister in the [African] Methodist church in 1911 after
taking seminary 
work at Morris Brown College.  During his 23 years of ministering he served several
churches in the 
southwest Georgia conference.
	Davis is survived by his wife [Ione Jackson Davis] and six children [Jefferson,
Jr., Garland Goldston, 
John, George, Frances, and Paul) and two grandchildren [Bobbie McClasky and Walter
Goldston]. The 
funeral will be held at the St. James AME Church on Wednesday at 2:30 pm.
