The subject of this notice was a native of South Carolina, from which State her parents removed to Elbert county, Ga, in her early life. Her early religious advantages, (separate from the counsels of a pious mother) were not such as the present generation enjoy, living as she did in the rural districts of a then sparsely settled country. It was not until after her marriage and she was the mother of children, that she was converted to God. Her conversion was bright, satisfactory and glorious. She joined the Methodist Church, in which communion she remained until death severed the connection. A husband and eight children preceded her to the grave, six of whom died after reaching mature age, with the same disease-consumption. The life of our departed sister had its portion of the trials and sorrows incident to earth. But amid all the eventual scenes through which she was called to pass, the religion of our Lord Jesus Christ was a solace and comfort, and proved its divine origin in her case. Her religious experience was such as might be expected of one whose consecration to God at conversion, was so entire and absolute. Often she was enabled to shout aloud the praise of her Redeemer, from a feeling sense of His love shed abroad in her heart. During her illness, she frequently requested her children not to grieve over her decease, as she felt her course on earth finished, her duty discharged, and that she was ready and anxious to enter into that rest “that remaineth for the people of God.” Even up to life’s latest hour she was conscious that the time of her departure was at hand. Her voice having become inarticulate, the writer, who was at her bed side, enquired if she still felt Jesus precious, and she responded by the motion of her features in the affirmative. How appropriate the text of scripture used by her pastor on the funeral occasion, “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.” Our sister leaves four daughters, three married and one a widow, besides other relatives and friends to mourn her loss, but they mourn not as those who have no hope, feeling that their loss is her eternal gain.
