>From “What Columbus Negroes Die Of”


“…An Enquirer-Sun reporter yesterday looked through the death certificates 
book in the city office.  The death cases among colored people where causes of 
death was [sic] assigned were as follows:


“Ava WILSON, organic heart disease; 
Infant of Larua GRANT, fever; 
Willie JOHNSON, LaGrippe; 
Anna L. HARDAWAY, meningitis; 
Warren DORSEY, pneumonia; 
Marietta DAVIS, consumption; 
Infant of Harriet WRIGHT, pneumonia; 
Harriet LEWIS, LaGrippe.”


The “Columbus (GA) Enquirer-Sun” newspaper, Thursday, 20 FEB 1902.  


LaGrippe is an old term for influenza (the flu).  Consumption is now known as 
tuberculosis, or TB.  I am not related to any of these individuals.  I came 
across this item while researching an unrelated matter.  I would be very 
interested to know if such death certificate records are still on file with the 
city/county government in Columbus, and for what dates they were maintained.
