John E. Simmons

  Funeral services for John E. Simmons who died at his residence, 913 
Eighteenth Street Wednesday morning at 6:30 o'clock were held at the Striffler 
chapel at 4:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon. Rev. E.T. Dawson,pastor of the 
Linwood Baptist church, assisted by Rev. Jimmie Mayo, pastor of the East 
Highland Assembly of God, officiated. Burial was in the Philadelphia church 
cemetary in Lee County, Ala.
  Mr. Simmons, who was born in Waverly, Ala. April 3, 1893, had been ill for a 
long period of time. He was the son of John and Emma Saxon Simmons. He had 
resided here for 25 years and at one time was a member of the Columbus police 
department.
   Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Pearl Garrett Simmons,Columbus; four daughters, 
Mrs. W. C. Williams, Shreveport,La., Mrs. John Clark, Smith Station, Ala., Mrs. 
M. L. Phelts, Columbus, and Miss Evelyn Simmons,Columbus; three sons; Herbert 
Simmons, Columbus, John E. Simmons, Columbus, and W.D. Simmons, Columbus; his 
mother, Mrs. Emma Simmons, Waverly, Ala.; four sisters, Mrs. Clyde James,Mrs. 
Cleo Coughlin, Mrs. Floyd Brown, and Mrs. Maggie Smith; four brothers, Raphael, 
Clarence, George, and Murray Simmons. Also two grandchildren and several nieces 
and nephews.
   Pallbearers were James Bray, Leon Dawson, Melvin Grissett, James Robinson, 
Lamar Phelts, and Jake Lee.



Additional Comments:
John's full name was Johne Eugene Simmons. He was married to Pearl Garrett in 
Lee County, Alabama in 1915. His father was John Henry Simmons of Tallapoosa 
County, and Chambers County, Alabama.  The obituary indicates the place of 
birth as Waverly, Alabama. This is in Chambers County. Census records indicate 
that he may have been born in Tallapoosa County. His father had died in 1931
