Lafette Roberts, SR, 74, retired Columbus restaurant owner, died at 7:20 a.m. yesterday at St. Francis Hospital after an illness of several months. Mr. Roberts resided at 3646 Cusseta Rd. and had lived here since 1908. He was a member of the Memorial Presbyterian Church. He was born in Champaign, Tenn., Feb. 24, 1882, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Roberts. Mr. Roberts is well-known to Columbusities for the 14-room "castle" he build around a silo on Cusseta Road, for his collection of photographs tracing the growth of Columbus from a muddy-street town to a bustling metropolitan area. He also instigated a drive in 1947 to erect a monument at Benning and Cusseta roads honoring the nation's prisoners of war who died in World War II. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Allen Thayer, two sons, Firm T. La. Roberts, Jr, and James Cullen Roberts all of Columbus; a brother, C. S. Roberts, Rock Island, Tenn, four grandchildren, Allen R. Thayer, David C. Thayer and John P. Thayer and Miss Angie Louise Roberts, all of Columbus; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Striffler-Hamby Chapel, with the Rev. L. W. Warren, Jr., pastor, Memorial Presbyterian Church in charge. Burial will be in Riverdale Cemetery.
