Smenner Died Friday Dr. J.E. Smenner died at his home in Columbus on Friday morning last, after having been in ill health for some time. He had been a sufferer of Bright’s disease and had been ill for two or three months, his condition several weeks ago having been regarded at that time as quite critical. He seemed to rally from the attack, however, and his family and friends hoped that his life might be prolonged for years. He was in his drugstore as usual on Thursday and so his death was quite a shock to his friends. Heart failure is supposed to have been the immediate cause of death. Dr. Smenner was one of the most popular men in the city and among his intimate friends was thoroughly beloved for his nobility and generosity of character. He was strong and sincere in his friendship and was a man of many truly admirable traits, and all who knew him intimately had for him the most genuine sentiments of esteem and friendship. The deceased was 53 years of age and spent a majority of the years of his manhood in Columbus. He was a resident of Columbus a good many years ago and moved away returning about a dozen years ago. For quite a while he was proprietor of the Rose Hill Pharmacy, but left and came to Buena Vista where he resided a year or two. He again entered the drug business of Mr. Ralph O. Howard, at the corner of Broad and Eleventh streets. He disposed of the business a year or two ago and acquired the Waverly Pharmacy, which he was conducting at the time of his death. He was also proprietor of the Jordan City Pharmacy. Dr. Smenner was a Lutheran, and attended the church of St. Mary, the Virgin. He was also one of the most prominent members of the Masonic fraternity in Columbus, being a member of the Columbus Lodge and also the Knights Templar. He was an ardent Mason, thoroughly imbued with the high principles of this order, and his daily life exemplified its beautiful precepts. Besides his devoted wife, he is survived by six children, Isabel, Olivia, Edwin, Bessie, Edwina and Anna Smenner, all of Columbus. The funeral took place from the church of which he was a member, at 2:30 o’clock Saturday afternoon and he was interred at Riverdale cemetery.
