Schley Grand High Priest 1854-1861 Philip T. Schley was elected Grand High Priest in Augusta in 1854 and re-elected each succeeding year until 1861. He was born on August 24, 1798 and died in the city of Savannah on August 31, 1862. Our first and third Grand High Priests were brothers, but they were the first two to pass into the great beyond. Deputy Grand High Priest Samuel Lawrence, who presided at the annual convocation in 1863, has the following kind words to say of his predecessor: "Honorable, upright, social, hospitable, Companion Schley was remarkable for his plain dealing, sincerity and truth, the distinguishing traits of a Freemason. His addresses and reports to this Grand Chapter afford many instances and examples of these, which were commended by not a few of our sister Grand Chapters. True and ardent in his friendships he was also what the great moralist loved--an honest hater. Unyielding in his principles, he sometimes gave offense where he intended none, and thus to the mere acquaintance he ofte! n appeared harsh and austere: but to those who were admitted to the inner sanctuary of his friendship, none was every more kinds, more considerate, more amiable. Given to hospitality, it was his pleasure to be surrounded by such at his profuse board, where elegance and unostentatious kindness joined to make the guests happy and at home. In private and in public life his axiom was--a truly Masonic one--that in morals and in politics, as well as in mathematics, the shortest line between two given points is always a straight one, and hense he had no respect for the winding and the tortuous. Such were some of the principal traits of character in our deceased companion." He was also Grand Master for seven years.
