A descendant of Fielding Lewis of Virginia who was married to George Washington's sister Betty, Lewis was described as "sternly upright and just, with a courage for any emergency." He later was Judge of the County (now Probate) Court of Russell County for many years, and was "one of the best and most satisfactory county officers in the State," according to John H.
