Nationally the history of Sears began in 1886 when a shipment of watches was missent to a railroad station in a small Minnesota community of North Redwood. The town’s 23 year old railroad agent, Richard W. Sears, received permission to sell them. Sears quickly disposed of the watches to other station agents by direct mail, then bought more and by fall of 1886 was in business for himself. The next year he moved to Chicago and hired a watchmaker named Alvan C. Roebuck. Thus, Sears, Roebuck and Co. was born. The firm’s first 39 years – a period of great growth—was spent entirely in the catalog order business. The Sears Catalog, which became known as “America’s Wish Book”, served as a general store for millions of rural Americans. 50 years of service to Columbus and the surrounding community. Since 1928: D.S. Reynolds, Columbus Sears first store manager, stated in 1928 that the store method of doing business would be the same as those in Atlanta, Philadelphia and Chicago, but he promised to make Sears in Columbus strictly a Columbus institution, featuring service, convenience and satisfaction guaranteed or your money back. 1978 The emphasis in 1978 is the same as 1928, customer convenience, full service, quality merchandise at a fair price and we still offer you satisfaction guaranteed or your money back. Come by and help us celebrate our 50th Anniversary by taking advantage of outstanding values. H.C. Elliott Manger, Sears Columbus Square.
