Stowe THE WHITE FAMILY in Newton County, Georgia ROBERT, ELIZABETH and children, HUGH, THOMAS, and MARGRET from County Antrim, Ireland Robert White, Sr. (1776-1859) of Larne, County Antrim, Ireland, married Elizabeth Moore (1772-before 1850) about 1798 in Ireland. They were the parents of 10 children, all born in Ireland. They came to the US with their 8 living children, and they and 3 of these children were early residents and industrial leaders in Newton County. Children of Robert White and Elizabeth Moore: John White 1799 – 1881 + Jane Rosina Richards 1806 - 1891 Margret White 1801 - aft. 1880 William M. White 1803 – 1895 + Jane McAlister ? – 1846 + Caroline E. 1824 - Unknown Robert Jr White 1805 – 1898 + Mary W. Cobb 1809 - 1880 David White 1808 - 1828 James White 1810 - 1828 Adams White 1812 - 1829 Thomas M. White 1812 – 1900 Hugh White 1816 – 1912 + Alice Hardeman 1832 - 1893 Elizabeth White 1820 – bef. 1850 + Hugh Wilson ? – bef. 1850 Their son, John came to America about 1826 and returned to Ireland to encourage the rest of his family to follow because of the opportunities he found in manufacturing. Robert., Sr. and wife Elizabeth, along with six of their children, arrived in 1829 in the port of Charleston, SC on board the ‘William of Liverpool’ from Belfast. Their sons, John and Robert, Jr. were already in the United States at this time. Their son, Adams White died of yellow fever soon after arriving in Charleston, and the remainder of the family went to Anderson Co., SC where they operated a mill at Hurricane Shoals. Not long after, William and Robert, Jr. were operating a mill in Laurens Co., SC and the rest of the family moved to Athens, GA about 1833. John White had been employed to run the cotton mill in Athens known as Georgia Factory, the first water-powered cotton manufacturing plant south of the Potomac, which he eventually owned. John’s Athens home was later moved to Dillard, GA and is now Whitehall Inn. Daughter Elizabeth married Hugh Wilson in Athens, and at least one of their children was raised in Newton County after their deaths. Robert White, Jr. settled in Barrow County (then Jackson) where he built White’s Mill, but his son Henry C. White settled in Newton County and, in 1893, is listed as Postmaster of Curtis, which later became Mansfield. William White moved to Madison Co., Mississippi and operated a cotton mill there. Robert White, Sr. was living in Newton County by 1840, and about 1844, sons Hugh and Thomas, and daughter Margret moved to Newton County. Neither Thomas nor Margret ever married. Hugh married Alice Hardeman (1832-1893), daughter of Felix Hardeman and Althea Jennings, 12 December 1848 in Newton County. Newton Manufacturing Company on the east side of the Alcovy River was the earliest industry in Newton County. It was operated by John Webb in 1845, with Robert White. Sr. as his partner by 1846. They dissolved their partnership in “Newton Factory” by 1847, and Robert Sr. purchased lots 125, 126, and 127 along the west side of the Alcovy River in that year. He deeded 2 acres for a Methodist Church, which was most likely Red Oak Methodist Church as it was already in existence at that time and stands adjacent to the former homes of Hugh and Robert White, Sr. The will of Robert White, Sr. written 4 November 1852 (he died in 1859) indicates that he owned a factory (cotton mill), saw mill, and grist mill at that time. The mill known as White’s Factory, owned and operated by Hugh and his brother Thomas in Newton County, is referenced in 1864 tax lists and is believed to have been built just before or during the Civil War. White’s Factory stood on lot 125, just below the Jones’ Grist Mill and was reportedly burned by Sherman’s troops in November 1864. Hugh also owned a cotton mill in Butts County on the Ocmulgee River that was destroyed during Sherman’s March to the Sea. The Whites rebuilt according to tax and census records indicating Hugh and Thomas White were involved in cotton manufacturing for the years 1874-1878 and 1880, but not in 1884. The foundation and iron pins of White’s Factory are still standing on the west bank of the Alcovy River at Factory Shoals (White Shoals). Hugh White can be found in the Newton Factory census in 1850-1880, and served as Postmaster of Newton Factory from 15 Aug, 1846 to 27 May, 1847. Robert, Sr., Hugh, and Thomas are each listed as “manufacturist” in 1850 and Margret is listed as having real estate of her own. In 1860, after their father’s death, Hugh and Thomas are listed as manufacturers and Margret has inherited the parents’ home. By 1870, Hugh is listed as a farmer and Thomas as a manufacture.. In 1880, occupation for both Hugh and Thomas is listed as “manufacturer of cotton goods”. Margaret White died some time between 1880 and 1900, and Thomas died 5 January 1900 at the age of 87. Hugh White died 12 October 1912 in Newton County at the age of 96 and was buried in the family cemetery adjacent to his home, just north of Red Oak United Methodist Church. Descendants of Hugh White owned or operated several businesses in Covington through the years including the Covington Hotel; Heard, White, and Thompson Mercantile; White’s Department Store, and White’s Tire and Auto.
