He moved to Walker County, Alabama, ca. 1839 with his family, where his parents are believed to have died; he then lived with the family of James Dutton, his cousin. He married Mary Emily Rushing ca. 1851, and was the father of four children: Sarah Edna Dutton, who married Jeff Burrow; Eliza Jane Dutton, who married Jacob Daily Lindsey; George Washington Dutton, who married Nancy Jane Beddingfield; and Simeon B.
