Left there May 2d and marched two miles below Big Black River towards Port Gibson, Miss., thence to Baker's Creek, Miss., where we engaged the enemy May 16, 1863 Retreated and covered the retreat of the entire army to Big Black River that night. Marched back to Vicksburg, May 17, 1863 and went into the 'Rifle Pits' same night, remained there until the surrender, July 4, 1863 Left Vicksburg July 12, 1863 Marched to Enterprise by the 20th of July, a distance of one hundred and sixty five miles, with four days' rations.
