Butler Entirely Destroyed by Fire Monday Morning. The large and stately residence belonging to Mr. Geo. D. Butler, and known as the W. P. Anderson place, just above the Academy Springs, was totally destroyed by fire Monday morning at 1 o’clock. The fire originated in the Southwest corner of the cook room, and could easily have been extinguished had water been convenient. Mr. Butler on discovering the fire, grabbed a bucket of water and dashed it upon the flames, almost extinguishing them, and would have been successful but for the inability to get another bucket of water in time. The wind was blowing at a high rate of speed, and in a few minutes the house was totally enveloped in flames. The cause of the fire is buried in obscurity as there had been no fire in the cook room since Sunday at noon. The fire was discovered by little George Butler, who had been sick for several days, and awoke crying at the top of his voice. This brought Mr. Butler to his bedside, and glancing out of the window saw the bright glare of the flames as they began to stray to and from because of the heavy gale blowing. The house was one of the largest and most commodious residences in Covington, and cost about $5,000. It was built in 1852 by W. P. Anderson. The building was purchased by Mr. Butler last year, and carried insured on it to the amount of $1,800. Mr. Butler and family are now stopping with their friend and neighbor, Mr. J. J. Smith.
