Newton Anderson, the well known, long-honored, famous and efficient Sheriff of Newton County. He was elected before the war, 1847, by Whigs (he at that time being an ardent but conscious Whig,) by a large majority. He held the office, with the exception of one term, until the war closed and he was then disqualified. After the arraignment of the north against the south, and the bloody and terrific sequel known to the world, after 4 years of bloodshed and slaughter and carnage and hunger and thirst and manifold sufferings, trials, and tribulations, indescribable by tongue or pen, and inconceivable by the novice or uninitiated, the light of which bedims the vividly horrid radiance of a Waterloo, after all this (and much more untold) which passed away, as the mists of the morning, but to live forever in history and the hearts of the survivors of the “Civil War” and their progeny, then was peace and harmony once more restored to this fair southland, and a general restitution, renovation, and inauguration was began, and government was once more partially restored. After this universal quickening again into life, Col. Anderson shared the honors, and was again called to the front ranks of his county, a re-election as Sheriff in 1871, this time as a Democrat, in which political status he has ever since been found, and to day Newton County boast no sounder Democrat than he. He has held the office ever since 1871, with the exception of one term, being beat out by the independents in 1873. So you see he has held the office of Sheriff almost consecutively since 1817 up to the present, a period of 39 years, which fact perhaps has no duplicate. He is now 72 years old and perhaps the oldest Sheriff, by age and service in Georgia. His first term in official life was n 1836, when he was Sheriff in S. C., at the early age of 23. During all his official life it is a most remarkable fact that he has never been hurt and has never hurt anyone. He has served both as a necessity and for a natural love of the duty. With him it has been a pleasure as well as a duty to serve his country in this official capacity. A very important feature we would not fail to mention. It is Sheriff Anderson’s strictness as regards the money matters of his office. In his long official life, he has never permitted himself to use official money but invariably deposits such in bank instantly after reception. And this good method and uprightness in official life he has earnestly impressed upon associate officers, always warning them to be careful with money received. He is the present incumbent of Newton County, and no doubt, will continue to be so as long as he is physically able. As a matter of interest and information, the above has been spread before our readers. Simply this and nothing more.
