The ceremonies will be interesting and the public generally will be invited. Col. L. H. Patillo, of the Augusta Chronicle, had this to say of this noble charity: Covington is distinctive in the possession of an institution which ranks as a most singular monument of Christian charity. It is an orphan’s home for friendless Negro children. The architect and builder of this monument is a Negro woman. Her name is Dinah Pace. She is a teacher in the colored public school at Covington. For years she has been taking care of five or six motherless children, giving them the rudiments of an education and preparing them for the duties of life. As soon as one child grew large enough to earn a livelihood, the devoted benefactress would supply its place with another waif. For years no purse strings were unloosed for this Godly charity but her own. Humble, unostentatious, but loyal and loving she continued in her noble work. Sometime since, the curtains of heaven were moved aside and light fell athwart the lowly mission. Donations followed. With such contributions, and with money earned by her own toil, she began the erection of a three story wooden building last fall. The building is now nearing completion, and beneath its roof is sheltered fie or six colored foundlings. It is called “The Covington Colored Orphan Asylum,” and every nail in the structure will crystallize into diamonds to deck the brow of the sheltering mother.
