In company with two of his grandchildren, Miss Guffin and her ten year old brother, Mr. Livingston was returning home from Bethany Church in a buggy. While crossing Snapping Shoals Creek, which was very high, his horse fell through the bridge, or got his foot in a hole thereof, and the occupants of the buggy were thrown in the stream, where the water was ten feet deep. The little boy reached the bank someway, but the young lady and Mr. Livingston could not get out, and in order to save their lives were obliged to hold to some bushes of drift wood to keep their heads above water. Mr. J. W. Black, a neighbor, heard their cries, and in company with a colored man, went to them. Mr. Black rescued Miss Guffin, while the colored man bravely swam out in the dangerous stream and brought Mr. Livingston safe to shore, but he was more dead than alive, and it required some time to revive him and restore him to consciousness. Mr. Livingston is yet very weak, as is the young lady, but the little boy has about recovered from the fright and injuries received. The horse was drowned. The Georgia Enterprise, February 12, 1891 Esquire Alfred Livingston and his granddaughter, Miss Guffin, who came so near being drowned, have about recovered from the shock and injuries received. Messrs. C. Q. Cowan, Rob Loyd E. D. Thacker, J. W. Black and a few others, rendered heroic work to rescue Mr. Livingston and Miss Guffin from a watery grave on the occasion of their thrilling experience in Snapping Shoals Creek.
