He failed to give a lecture. ~One of Alabama's lovely daughters sent Edward Farmer a handsome bouquet of choice flowers Saturday. ~Mr. Vance and bride, of Buford, have been on a visit to their brother-in-law, Mr. Joseph Chapman, of our city this week. ~Mr. Robert Livingston has the finest Irish potatoes we have seen this season, he is a good gardner and a mighty clever gentleman. ~A white man has been among the colored people here this week getting up a class to teach them how to iron clothes. We have not learned whether he was successful or not. ~The new Baptist Church at Social Circle was dedicated Sunday. Several parties from this county were present and speak in high tones of the sermon of Rev. Mr. Boykin on the occasion. ~Esquire Frank Hays went to Henry County or somewhere in that direction, Monday last. We met the 'Squire on his way and he was rigged out in the best of style and had the whole of his new buggy to himself. We learn that he was married to a charming young lady of Oak Hill, and if so, we wish him all the happiness in the world. ~We hear it whispered that Prof. Homer Wright will probably be chosen President of our Female College. He is well qualified to fill the position, and in case Rev. Mr. Bonnell resigns we hope Prof. Wright will be chosen, that is, if he desires the Presidency. ~At the July session of the Legislature, Major John C. Key, Representative from Jasper County, will introduce a bill to prohibit the sale of liquor in Monticello, also a bill to prevent stock from running at large upon the lands of other people than the owners thereof. ~One of our wealthiest business men is said to carry his own insurance. If he gets burnt out he is able to resume business again, and if he don't many dollars will have been saved which otherwise would have gone to the insurance companies. ~We have learned that Rev. W. B. Bonnell contemplates resigning the Presidency of the Georgia Methodist Female College at this place at the close of the Spring session next weeek. He has made a faithful officer and his brief stay here has made him many warm friends. We wish him peace, happiness and prosperity wherever his footsteps chance to roam, and it is with regret that we learn he will soon leave our city. ~The last of J. C. Harper's grocery goods were sold at public outcry Monday. Most of the liquor was bought by saloon men who paid from a dollar to a dollar and a quarter per gallon. The billiard table brought $102.00 and was purchased by a party of young men who propose to use it in this city for the amusement of themselves and their friends. A small lot of tobacco belonging to A. M. Williams was also sold, besides other articles hardly necessary to mention.
