REYNOLDS had his carriage brought out so that his wife, his 17 years old daughter, Miss Kate; his sister, Mrs. F. E. MERRITT; and his niece, Miss Alma KOHLHEIM, aged 20 years, could attend church in the city. Mr. REYNOLDS remained at home with his brother John and his mother. The ladies attended service and were returning home when the carriage run on the spirited horses while coming down a hill, causing them to run away. Miss Kate REYNOLDS jumped from the carriage and falling on her head her neck was broken and she died almost instantly. Mrs. MERRITT received so serious injuries by being thrown out that she died in a few hours. Miss KOHLHEIM was severely, but it is hoped not fatally hurt. Mrs. REYNOLDS jumped from the carriage and escaped injury. The colored driver did all he could to hold the horses, but it was beyond his power. He also escaped without being hurt. The bodies of Miss Kate REYNOLDS and Mrs. MERRITT were brought to Covington Tuesday and laid to rest in the family cemetery here. Words cannot express the sorrow we feel for our friends who have lost their loved ones in such a sad and tragic manner. This family has been peculiarly unfortunate in the past, as well as now. About eight years ago they lived in Clayton County. Mr. F. P. REYNOLDS and his wife were down stairs nursing a sick baby. Their oldest daughter Verdia, then almost ten or eleven years of age, and her aunt, were up stairs. The house caught fire in the kitchen and had enveloped the stairway, so that escape from above was impossible, and they had to listen to the distressing cries of his sister in law and daughter as they burned to death, and the neighbors had to hold him to prevent his rushing into the flames and to certain death in the vain attempt to save his daughter and wife’s sister.
